Jobs and Services
Last updated: August 3, 2026
Jobs and services provide an added level of structure by standardizing earnings information according to the job or service being fulfilled by your employee or contractor. This may be helpful when paying your workers. It's optional and depends on what's best for your organization.
Jobs apply to employees, and services apply to contractors.
Once a job or service has been created, you can select to apply it during the process of running employee payroll or paying a contractor.
For example, let's say you create a contractor service named "Senior Equipment Technician" and finish setting up the relevant information for it. Now, when you go to pay any contractor fulfilling this service, you can easily apply the same earnings attributes.
Other than the difference in terminology, and which worker type they apply to, jobs and services provide essentially the same function in Zeal.
Before You Begin
Have the following available:
The 📄 Departmentsthe job should belong to, if you use departments to organize your company
Wage information for the job (hourly rate, overtime rate, PTO rate, etc.)
Billing information for the service (flat fee or rate-based amount)
The customer account the service should bill back to, if applicable
Any external ID or GL code your company uses to sync with accounting or timekeeping systems
Creating a Job
Step 1:
Open Jobs and Services From the left-hand menu, go to Organization > Jobs and services. This page has two tabs:

Contractor services - services assigned to 1099 contractors
Each tab shows a table of existing records with Name, Description, Department, and Created at columns, along with a search bar to find a specific entry. Select + New job or service in the top right to create a new employee job or contractor service.
Step 2:

Wage - the pay rate for that earning type
Bill Rate Type - Flat or Percentage
Bill Rate - the flat dollar amount or percentage used to bill a customer for time worked under this job
You can add multiple earning components to the same job, for example an Hourly wage alongside a separate PTO rate. Select Create to save the job. You'll see a confirmation once the job has been created, and it will appear in the Employee jobs table.
Creating a Service
Step 1:
Choose New service from the dropdown to open the Service details panel.
Provide:

After Creating Jobs and Services Once a job or service is created, it becomes available to assign to people in your Workforce, so their pay and billing are calculated correctly during payroll and invoicing.
